For Team SmartBox, being a part of the prestigious Dubai Creek Harbour (DCH) has been as humbling as it was exciting. An ambitious, future-facing project that merges Emaar standards of luxury with Dubai’s sustainability vision, DCH is a gorgeous waterfront development that sits abreast of the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary.

A stellar model for global cities in every sense! The deadlines were tight: we were to create a 5400 square foot, two storey lounge space with bathrooms out of 18 shipping containers (16 x 40ft + 2 x 20ft), and instal them on site – all in the space of a fortnight, no less!

At SmartBox, we so enjoy a challenge! And what’s more? DCH is also an endeavour that ties in very closely with our own ethos. Through creating world class living, work and leisure spaces out of upcycled shipping containers, we constantly strive to provide our clients with the most durable and eco-friendly construction options available.

Needless to say that afterwards, we stopped for a second to admire the view. And our own handiwork.

Containers by the Sea

We love working on beachfront properties and developments, primarily because cargotecture is so much more environmentally friendly to these surroundings than most other forms of construction. For one, being modular and largely factory-made, there is very little disturbance to the beach and the beachgoers in the name of construction. Secondly, as these container units do not require deep foundations to be dug, such construction has minimum impact on the shoreline.

In fact, at our Smart Box facility in Dubai, we have been upcycling used shipping containers into all kinds of live-work-play spaces for two decades now. From single-unit kiosks to multiple-level cafe and office spaces, we have done it all. And yet, the possibilities of this technology remain a constant source of amazement – even to us.
